Who, Me?

Yeah, so I'm Nick. I design websites for a living and at other times tinker with making things like unpleasant musical sounds and spaceships. I watch a lot of TV, but I'm not reading as much as I used to. Which is bad.

I spent a few years working on a PhD in cultural studies, but didn't get very far with it.

Rationale & Remit

I wanted to write more often, and to try and write at greater length, about the media I watch and the books I read, to force myself to think more critically about how I consume culture. I also wanted to play with some cool new web gadgets, about which more below.

Because I also like conversation and community, I wanted to have a comments facility, too. I'm currently testing out Muut dot com, not the least because it isn't Disqus.

This site is hosted on a DigitalOcean "Droplet". The server is managed through a ServerPilot control panel that makes things like SSL/SPDY support a piece of cake. In fact, I'm pretty impressed overall with how fast it runs, even with very little optimisation on my part. Obviously I'm serving purely secure content, too.

Content is managed through the Craft CMS, which is incredibly powerful and flexible. And has a free version! All text is set in Jubilat, via TypeKit, a friendly and versatile slab serif. As ever these days, the design is built upon a sturdy Foundation.
